Photographing the Kim family is always such a joy, especially since I’ve had the privilege of capturing their memories for the past four years. It’s amazing to watch families grow and change over time, and this year’s session at the Palo Alto Cactus Gardens was no different!
Mom, Dad, and their two kids—an energetic older brother and a younger sister—are always full of personality. While big brother was all about having fun and getting involved in the photos, little sister had her own plans! She wasn’t feeling the idea of posing this time around, which, as any parent knows, is just part of life with kids. But those candid moments, where she was being her own playful, sometimes moody, self, actually ended up being some of my favorite shots. There’s something special about capturing a family as they are, with all their unique personalities shining through.
The Cactus Gardens provided such a fun, different backdrop for this session. The earthy tones of the desert plants paired perfectly with the vibrant energy of this family. Even when little sister wasn’t in the mood to participate, the natural flow of the session made sure every moment—whether posed or spontaneous—felt authentic and full of life.
After four years of photographing the Kims, I’ve come to love these sessions even more each time. Watching the kids grow, seeing how their dynamics evolve, and capturing these real moments is such an honor. Can’t wait to see what next year’s session brings!
